The section of the cycle track covering Sheung Shui, Tai Po and University Station is full of historical, cultural and natural elements. One of the oldest markets in Hong Kong, Luen Wo Hui Market, is located here. The Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail and Tai Po Man Mo Temple, alongside other historical and cultural monuments, serve as testimony to the history and living styles of the early settlers in the New Territories.

There are also many tourist attractions suitable for family outings, such as the Hong Kong Railway Museum, formerly known as Tai Po Market Railway Station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway, where one can learn the history and development of Hong Kong’s railway system and children will find it highly enjoyable to hang around.

Like Tai Mei Tuk, the Hong Kong Science Park, adjacent to the Pak Shek Kok seaside promenade, is well known for its scenic environment and paradise-like recreational area. In addition, one may visit the fishing village at Sam Mun Tsai to experience the atmosphere of an old fishing village. The magnificent rocky landscapes at Ma Shi Chau, alongside the Tai Po Fung Yuen Butterfly Conservation Area with around 180 butterfly species, are the mesmerising wonders of the nature. Enjoy yourself!

Sam Mun Tsai Village was originally a fishing village in the eastern part of Pak Sha Tau near Pak Pai Kok. In the past, two small islands between Pak Sha Tau Chau and Pak Kung Tsui formed three small waterways connecting Plover Cove and Tolo Channel, hence the name “Sam Mun Tsai”. In the 1960s, when the Government constructed the Plover Cove Reservoir, some villagers were relocated to Yim Tin Tsai in the Tai Po district. After the villagers moved to Yim Tin Tsai, the name “Sam Mun Tsai” was transferred to the new village, which was named “Sam Mun Tsai New Village”. Facing Plover Cove to the east and connected to Ma Shi Chau to the south, the village is surrounded by picturesque natural scenery such as Pat Sin Leng, Plover Cove, Tolo Harbour, etc., making it a great place to relax on holidays. Following the winding cycling track (Sam Mun Tsai section), you can enjoy views of the entire Shuen Wan Typhoon Shelter. Sam Mun Tsai New Village still retains a strong fishing village atmosphere and the unique charm of the fishing village is showcased - sampan boats are moored in the typhoon shelter and various sizes of fish rafts are built outside the breakwater. At sunset, the sky is filled with colourful clouds. The “golden light” sprinkles on the sea, shimmering with a breathtakingly beautiful and romantic atmosphere. The place is an ideal spot for couples to visit and take photos.

Apart from the mesmerising scenery, Sam Mun Tsai New Village is also known for its unique geological features. The Tai Po Geoheritage Centre located in Sam Mun Tsai New Village is Hong Kong’s first information and education centre with a geological park theme. Besides introducing the culture and lifestyle of the Sam Mun Tsai fishermen, the Centre also showcases the ecology and geological features of the area, exhibiting various village artefacts and rock specimens. The Centre also provides guided tours.

Starting from Sam Mun Tsai and passing through the tombolo, you will reach Ma Shi Chau, which is known as the “outdoor geological museum”. Ma Shi Chau is a “geosite” of the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. The 1.5-kilometre-long nature trail running along the southeast shore features the sedimentary rock formations and various geological features on the island.
